Jung’s first mandala

“ The “squaring of the circle” is one of the many archetypal motifs which form the basic patterns of our dreams and fantasies. But it is distinguished by the fact that it is one of the most important of them from the functional point of view. Indeed, it could even be called the archetype of wholeness.”

“Nora’s Song” / Cecelia Holland

stagemanagerclr:

I may not have enjoyed this a much as I would have if I were more versed in English history during the time of Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Didn’t seem to be much TO this short story.

Have you read Holland’s book about Eleanor of Aquitaine? That would give greater context. The short story is basically about the dissolution of a power couple’s marriage and how the children get caught in the middle and become pawns for entire countries.

A number of early pictures, dating from probably 850 to 750 B.C… reveal that a new type of warship had come into existence… The vessel had been given an offensive weapon: from its prow juts a powerful pointed ram. This must have inaugurated a new era of naval tactics… Victory would go to the crew so trained that it could respond instantly and accurately to command…. Sea battles became more and more contests in maneuvering, the captains using the oars as, centuries later, men-of-war would use their sails to attain the proper position to broadside.

Anonymous asked: Professor Freckles, read us a bedtime story.

bookofalmsivi:

You want a bedtime story?  Really?  Well, alright then.  If I know anything, it’s stories, for what’s a song but a story sung?  Let me just think for a moment…this one will do.

When I was still young, I lived in a House of Dibella and had many uncles who were like me.  One of them was an elf too, but he was an Altmer.  I thought him thousands and thousands of years old, but he really couldn’t have been more than a hundred.  An Altmeri eunuch worshiping the gods of the Imperials in Daggerfall is highly irregular -and I would know about irregularity- and I can only guess at the circumstances that led to him becoming so.  I know that he was not Summerset-born, but beyond that, I do not know.  I suspect that he was of mixed blood and so was given to the Temple instead of being culled, but I do not know for sure.

At any rate, he used to tell me stories of all sorts and this was one of them.  I hope I remember it correctly.

“When I played Skyrim, at the time, I hadn’t played any other ES game. I started out as a big Stormcloak supporter, but after seeing them more in-game and learning more about the lore in previous games by playing them (and reading on the wikis), I ended up an Imperial sympathizer. I think the hypocrisy behind the Markarth Incident with Ulfric sealed the deal for me. So it’s only OK for one ethnic group to rule over all of Skyrim and worship their pantheon, but another group who was there longer who just wants to do the same in only one area in all of Skyrim c annot?”

OP, you just didn’t read into the lore far enough. Nobody likes the Forsworn. The Forsworn were formed during an imperial invasion of the Reach (as described in the Legend of Red Eagle). In Daggerfall they’re shown as attacking the city and the account of it calls them daedra-worshipping heathens. They kidnap and sacrifice innocent travelers for their rituals. If you talk to the stable owner in Markarth, he says there are some of the old ways that shouldn’t come back. And, bottom line, the Stormcloaks want Nords to rule Skyrim, so there’s nothing inconsistent about their stance towards both imperial rule and the Reachmen. The only hypocrisy here is from those saying that imperialism is bad if the Nords practice it in Skyrim, but good if Cyrodiil tries to enforce it in all of Tamriel.
